Kitchen electrical code requirements come down to five things: at least two 20-amp small-appliance branch circuits, countertop receptacles placed so no point along the counter is more than 24 inches from an outlet, GFCI protection across the room, individual circuits for the major appliances, and lighting on its own separate circuit. Ground-fault protection in kitchens used to be a countertop rule. It is now a room rule.

Step 2: Count the countertop receptacles
Take your plan and do this for every counter run:
- Measure each continuous run of counter, wall to wall or wall to appliance.
- Cross off any section under 12 inches wide, and the space behind the sink and range that falls below the code thresholds.
- On each remaining run, place the first receptacle no more than 24 inches from the end.

- Only two small-appliance circuits on a large counter, technically compliant but immediately overloaded in use

FAQ: Kitchen Electrical Requirements
Does the microwave have to be on its own circuit? A countertop microwave you plug into a counter receptacle does not. A built-in or over-the-range unit almost always does, because the installation instructions call for an individual branch circuit and those instructions are enforceable.
Can the dishwasher and disposal share one circuit? Only if both manufacturers' instructions permit it and the combined load fits the circuit rating. Many installation manuals require separate circuits, so plan on two unless you have confirmed otherwise.
Can I use 15-amp receptacles on a 20-amp small-appliance circuit? Yes, where the circuit feeds more than one receptacle, which is the normal kitchen counter setup.
