Electric fireplace installation is mostly one electrical question: whether the circuit behind that wall can carry a 1,500 watt heater. Most 120V units draw about 12.5 amps on high, more than a 15 amp circuit is allowed to carry continuously, so a dedicated 20 amp circuit is the usual answer. Plug-in units running off an existing living room circuit are the exception, and every hardwired or 240V model needs a licensed electrician.

What an Electrician Actually Does for an Electric Fireplace

The electrical scope is narrow:

  • Read the nameplate and convert it into a real amp draw
  • Test the circuit you planned to use and find what else is on it
  • Pull a new home run from the panel when that circuit can't take the load
  • Set a receptacle or junction box where the manual allows it and the plug won't get crushed
  • Install the right breaker, including AFCI protection where the room requires it
  • Pull the permit and meet the inspector

Mantel, surround, stone, and framing are carpentry. Some electricians will frame a recess, many won't. Settle that before you book anyone, because a wall closed up before the box is set is expensive to undo.

How long it takes follows access, not the fireplace. A receptacle on a nearby circuit is a short visit. A home run into an open wall or up from an unfinished basement is typically a half day, and fishing that same circuit through a finished two-story house takes longer, plus a return trip for the inspection.

Can Your Existing Circuit Handle It? The Nameplate Math

Run this before you buy the unit.

1. Find the nameplate. A label on the back or underside of the firebox, repeated in the manual's spec table. You want watts, volts, and amps.

2. Convert watts to amps. Amps equal watts divided by volts. A 1,500 watt unit on 120V pulls 12.5 amps. Its 750 watt low setting pulls 6.3.

3. Translate BTU if that's all you have. One watt is 3.412 BTU per hour, so the "5,000 BTU" figure on the box works out to roughly 1,465 watts. Same heater, different label.

4. Find the breaker. Plug a lamp into the outlet you intend to use, then switch breakers off one at a time until it goes dead. Read the handle: 15 or 20.

5. Apply the 80 percent rule. A load running three hours or more counts as continuous, and a heater on a cold evening clears that easily. Continuous loads get sized at 125 percent, the same as never loading a circuit past 80 percent of its rating. A 15 amp circuit gives you 12 usable amps, a 20 amp circuit gives you 16.

6. Add up what shares the circuit. With that breaker still off, note every dead outlet, light, and switch in the room.

The row that catches people is 1,500 watts. That is the ceiling for a 120V cord-connected heater, so most units land there, and it doesn't fit on a 15 amp circuit even with nothing else plugged in.

When a Dedicated Circuit Is Required

An electric fireplace dedicated circuit stops being optional when:

  • The manual calls for one. Installation instructions are part of the product listing, and an install that contradicts them fails inspection.
  • The math calls for one. Any 120V unit at or above roughly 1,450 watts.
  • The unit is hardwired or 240V. A dedicated home run by definition, with a two-pole breaker on 240V.
  • The circuit already misbehaves. Lights dimming or a breaker tripping when the heater starts means that circuit is loaded. The answer is a new circuit, not a bigger breaker. A 20 amp breaker on 14 gauge wire is how house fires start.

Two things catch people at inspection. Current code puts AFCI protection on 120V 15 and 20 amp branch circuits in living rooms, family rooms, and dens, so the breaker costs more than a plain one, though the adopted code year decides the details. And a cord-and-plug fireplace goes straight into a wall receptacle: no extension cord, no power strip, and no fishing the factory cord through the wall to a hidden outlet behind the TV.

Freestanding and wall-mount units usually ship with a cord. Built-in inserts go either way, and larger 240V models are hardwire-only.

A hardwired electric fireplace has one advantage beyond capacity: nothing shows. No cord down a stone face, no receptacle cut into the surround.

Where the Box Goes Behind a Combustible Surround

Placement is what goes wrong on electric fireplace insert installation, and it goes wrong permanently.

  • Keep the connection accessible. Junction boxes have to stay reachable without tearing out finish, so you can't bury one behind stone veneer, tile, or shiplap. Fix the location before the mason arrives.
  • Don't pinch the plug. Manuals show the receptacle offset from the firebox body, inside the framed cavity but clear of the back panel.
  • Stay out of the discharge path. Electric fireboxes blow warm air through a grille at the top or bottom of the face. Follow the manual's clearances and keep the box out of that airflow.
  • Frame first, wire second, close last. A recessed unit wants the opening framed to the manual's dimensions with the box stubbed in before drywall, plus nail plates where cable passes near the stud face.
  • A fireplace under a TV needs two outlets. Running the fireplace cord up inside the wall isn't allowed. Plan a receptacle at each height while the wall is open, which is simple professional electrical outlet installation work at that stage.

Panel Capacity, Spare Slots, and When the Panel Has to Come First

A new circuit needs somewhere to land. Open the panel door and count.

  • One spare full-size slot for 120V, two adjacent slots for a 240V two-pole breaker.
  • No spares? Tandem breakers work only if the panel label approves them, and only in the slots that label allows. Otherwise it's a subpanel or a panel replacement.
  • Check the service, not just the slots. A 1,500 watt fireplace adds 12.5 amps of continuous load. On a 100 amp service already feeding central air, a dryer, a range, and an EV charger, a load calculation can show no room even with an empty slot sitting right there.
  • Obsolete panels are the real blocker. Some older types shouldn't have circuits added at all, and an AFCI breaker for a discontinued panel can be unobtainable. Work through whether your electrical panel needs upgrading before you shop for a fireplace.

Permits and Inspection for a New Circuit

A new branch circuit requires a permit in most jurisdictions. Plugging a corded unit into an existing outlet generally does not. Adding one receptacle to an existing circuit falls in between and depends on local rules.

The inspector checks breaker size against wire gauge, AFCI protection, box fill and support, cable stapling and nail plates, an accessible junction box, and a proper equipment ground. Any of it fails when the work was done to get the fireplace running rather than done to code. Unpermitted circuits also surface at resale, and an insurer investigating a fire can ask whether the heating circuit was permitted.

FAQ: Electric Fireplace Wiring

Do electric fireplaces need special wiring? The wire is ordinary, the capacity isn't. A 1,500 watt unit needs 12.5 amps of continuous headroom, which usually means its own 20 amp circuit.

Can I plug one into a regular outlet? Only if it came with a cord and the circuit has room. Find the breaker, check whether it's 15 or 20 amp, and total what else is on it.

Can the fireplace and the TV share a circuit? Only on a 20 amp circuit with a smaller unit. A 1,500 watt fireplace leaves about 3.5 amps, which a TV and soundbar eat through fast.

Do electric fireplaces need venting or a chimney? No. Nothing burns, so there's no flue, no gas line, and no combustion clearance to a chimney. The circuit is the only utility the unit needs, which is why this is an electrical job rather than a hearth job.

How much does one cost to run? Multiply the heater's kilowatts by your rate per kWh, which is printed on your electric bill. A 1,500 watt unit is 1.5 kW, so a rate of 18 cents per kWh would put high heat near 27 cents an hour, and the 750 watt low setting at half that. The flame effect alone, heater off, draws a small fraction of it.

Can I install it myself? Plugging a corded unit into an outlet that already has the capacity is homeowner work. Running a new branch circuit, adding a breaker, or hardwiring a firebox is licensed work in most jurisdictions, and doing it yourself is how a claim gets questioned later.
